Blackfriars Restaurant
Blackfriars Restaurant, established in 1239 as a Dominican friary, lays claim to being the oldest dining room in the UK and its city centre location makes it the perfect destination for a pre-theatre meal.
The medieval restaurant serves a classic but gutsy traditional British menu using local and seasonal ingredients, often straight from the farm.
Produce is sourced from all around the North East including mouth-watering aged beef, old breeds of pork and lamb, delicious award-winning cheeses and ice creams, organic vegetables, super-fresh fish and a host of award-winning beers.
In addition to the 72 seat restaurant, there’s also a newly restored banquet hall seating a further 50 diners and featuring bespoke oak furniture, chandeliers, wall coverings and stained-glass windows.
Blackfriars is open for lunch (12pm - 2.30pm) every day and every evening (except Sunday) from 5.30pm - late. The popular lunch menu is also available 5.30pm - 7pm weekdays and costs just £12 for 2 courses and £15 for three; a la carte menu after 7pm.
Dishes available include home-made fishcake, tartar sauce; risotto of smoked chicken and leek; smoked salmon, cream cheese, radish and fennel; beer-battered fish and chips, minted pease, tartar sauce; 6oz sirloin, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic butter; lemon polenta cake; and sticky toffee pudding.
